AMY KLOBUCHAR

After graduating from Yale University and the University of Chicago Law School, Amy Klobuchar worked in private practice before becoming the Hennepin County Attorney in 1998, serving as the chief prosecutor for Minnesota's most populous county.

In 2006, Klobuchar made history by becoming the first woman elected to represent Minnesota in the United States Senate. During her Senate career, she has earned a reputation as a pragmatic legislator who works across party lines to pass significant legislation.

She serves on several key committees, including the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Commerce Committee, and the Agriculture Committee. As a senator, Klobuchar has focused on consumer protection, antitrust issues, and infrastructure development.

Klobuchar has been remarkably productive in passing legislation, with more bills enacted than any other senator by the end of the 114th Congress in late 2016.

As of December 2018, she had sponsored or co-sponsored 111 pieces of legislation that became law. Her notable legislative achievements include leading the bipartisan Ocean Shipping Reform Act to address supply chain issues and shipping costs, landmark legislation to end human trafficking and combat the opioid epidemic, and significant consumer product safety legislation. Her work has resulted in the largest furniture and airbag recalls in American history.

The Lugar Center has consistently ranked Klobuchar in the top fifth of senators for bipartisanship.

As co-chair of the Senate Broadband Caucus, she successfully championed provisions in the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to expand high-speed internet access across the country. She also serves as Chairwoman on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Competition Policy, Antitrust, and Consumer Rights, where she has introduced comprehensive antitrust reform legislation. Klobuchar ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 before endorsing Joe Biden.
